What is Google Earth and what Google Maps?

Like other companies Google offers images and maps of the whole world. The difference between Google Earth and Maps is that with G Earth you have a special program that you can use to browse the world. It's nice, intuitive and helps you.  Google Maps is a web-based service with a similar, but limited functionality.

Start now and search for a location

Type in your location and you will be redirected to the appropriate Google Map.

Use Google Earth to browse the world

You can fly through the world and zoom into nearly every location with Google Earth which is great!

Some features of Google Earth are

  • You can "fly" through the world - e.g. it zooms from space to the location you're looking for - which is wonderful. If you haven't seen it you can't believe it.
  • They have some detailed satelite shots of the US
  • You can see points of interest (like in the screenshot - lodging, schools, ...)
  • You can annotate locations and share it with others
  • It needs only little bandwidth to transfer the images.

E.g. if you're looking for florida beach - this is the result.

You can download it for free at http://earth.google.com/

More information about Google Maps

When you are just looking for a location and don't wanna install a program - you should use Google Maps. This is a web-based service with a similar function as Google Earth.
E.g. if you ever wanted to see where the Google Plex (the headquarter of Google) is located - here it is.

You can use your mouse to scroll and move the image, enter other locations - and see the satelite images, too. This is also nice - but Google Maps doesn't like Florida Beach (no results found).

Problems and limitations

A common problem of this maps services is that they only have satelite images of the US, but only some rare for the rest of the world. E.g. you can't zoom into Europe, Asia and Africa - which isn't nice.
